Where is the safest place to be in an earthquake?

Nebraska. The safest place to be in an earthquake is Nebraska.

If you can't be in Nebraska, at least be outside, away from anything that can fall, break or collapse. If possible, try to be in a bamboo grove. Bamboo spreads through rhyzomes, strong underground roots that are ideal for holding together slopes and riverbanks.

If do find yourself indoors during an earthquake, lie on the floor close to, but not under, a bed. If the roof starts to collapse, the mattress will keep you safe by preventing the ceiling from falling all the way to the floor. (So, if you are in bed when the shaking starts, just roll over onto the floor.)
